Cute, Practical and Cheap - Storage

Here's a free and practical storage idea just for you!!

I've been putting off organizing a few rooms in my house due to wanting cute storage boxes. I keep waiting for them to go on sale but even with them on sale I would be spending at least $15 and still feel like I didn't get the number of storage boxes that I want. So I got to thinking about what I have such as fabric, boxes from moving, and hot glue gun. Putting those to work, I created my own storage boxes that match and for just a fraction of the cost of what sells in the store.

Before I begin, I want to recommend a good sturdy box and hot glue that's multi-temp - for the sake of the box and the fabric stick well together. Also, to save you money, buy fabric that is on sale rather then fancy fabric. The box won't go through the wash, so you do not need a super high quality fabric.

I started off with a box from USPS that we had in the attic and some fabric that I have compliments of my Grandmother and other projects (leftovers).

I cut the lids of the USPS box first then I put a bead of hot glue on a chosen corner of the box creating a line from top to bottom. I placed the edge of the fabric on the bead, pressed down and held it for a few minutes. Then I continued by putting a line of hot glue on the next corner from top to bottom and pressing the fabric down until it felt secured. I did this all the way around.



Then, I flipped the box and glued two parallel sides first then the next two parallel sides. I moved to the top and glued the top edge. (You can put a lining inside to make it more attractive but that does use more fabric and hot glue. Plus, if you are filling the box up, no one will see the inside. ;) )


I choose a matching fabric and hot glued it around the top edge - creating a nice contrast.

You can fill your boxes with whatever you want or need to. Enjoy the Project!

Beautiful Japanese Flowers

I was on a mission to find animal patterns because I have some cute fabric I would love to use on a stuffed animal. In my search, I came across a super cute flower that was pinned to a stylish black bag. It caught my eye and I was curious to learn how to make it. If you are interested in it as well, please check out Women's Day site called "Fabric Flower Charm".

I have seen some flower ideas but nothing as cute as this. So I took on the challenge of creating each petal and putting them together.

It all starts with squares. Since I already had 4" X 4" squares, I used those. I was glad to find a purpose for those squares and they were a great size to start with.


There are several ways of folding but the first one I learned and the ones you see here are called Pleated Kanzashi Petals. I created 10 of them then sewed them together.



I cut out a round piece of the same fabric as the flowers and hot glued it to the bottom of the flower so as the keep the petals together.


To finish off the flower, I placed a cute button that I have had for a while. It matched perfectly!





As I mentioned above, there are various ways of making the petals so I tried a few different ones. Here's an example of a different flower I created.


A fun thing that can be done (and there are MANY things you can do) with these flowers is layering flowers like below as well as mix and matching fabrics.


This was such a fun project although I am not sure what I will do with these. I have a few ideas such as hair piece which is the original idea with these but I have not decided what I will do with the ones I made yesterday. Ideas are welcome!!

Elegant and Practical Coasters

Want to add style to your coffee table? These coasters are a great conversation starter during coffee time with their beautiful color combination.

This project is pretty simple and quite fun to make. It consists of 5 squares of fabric measuring 4" each. Three different fabric patterns are suggested for these coasters but they can be made with up to 5 different patterns.

One square remains "intact" as it is the base. The other four are folded in half and layered onto the base. *See picture below*

Finally, we have a patch work of folded fabric. The folded sides face each other while the "rough" edges face out.

A seam of about 1/8" holds the fabric together. Just a simple flipping of all the fabric produces this beautiful coaster.

Stylish "Messenger" Bag

Admirable and practical, this messenger bag is the perfect size for carrying everything you need without being too big or too small. This bag can be used for various purposes including diaper bag, camera bag, book bag, supply bag among many other options that would work for you.

This cute bag was a learning process for me as I had never done this pattern before. I got a great deal with the package that came with enough fabric to do two of the four projects offered.


I went through the instructions carefully and was able to cut all the pieces within an hour. One hour is a long time to cut all the parts but I did not have enough fabric that would leave room for error. While going through the cutting process I even came a cross the first of three errors in the instruction. I was a little disappointed with running into these errors but I fixed them.


In spite of the tedious process and MANY hours this bag required, it came together nicely. I enjoyed seeing the pieces come together to form this stylish bag.

The inside includes three pockets that are perfect for keys, cellphone or other small items.

As you can see, the bag is spacious inside. I was able to place a water bottle, a book and a wallet with plenty of room to spare.

The back of the bag has two nice size pockets for extra storage.

The finished product is a beautiful and classy 12 1/2 X 13 X 3 1/2 bag ready to have an owner that will walk in style.

Trendy Laptop Case

A laptop case is becoming more and more necessary as the affordability of laptop increases. The following project features a stylish laptop case made with great care for a dear friend.

My friend Sabrena Deal, who does beautiful work for S. Carter Studios , realized she needed a laptop case for her many wedding photography trips. She decided on the fashionable materials and buttons and handed me the job of creating this very practical case.


The pattern is compliment of Sew, Mama, Sew. The original pattern calls for an outside fabric, inside fabric (recommended flannel), fleece interfacing for protection, and Velcro for the opening.

My friend selected a beautiful and sophisticated flower print for the outside, a complimentary deep blue flannel for the inside and we decided on batting for the middle for added protection - rather than fleece interfacing.

We also decided on buttons because they do not wear out like Velcro and add a elegant accent.


You see the blue is a beautiful compliment to the reds and browns of the outside pattern.

The finished product produced an perfect fit for a laptop measuring 10" X 14" X 1.75".

I can't wait to create the next one. I truly enjoy special orders and look forward to more like these.

Love Birds Cake Topper

I am starting with these super cute love birds because they are hard to part with and were a lot of fun to make. I found the pattern online thanks to Spool.

I had some 10X10 blue floral fabric and some brown dotted fabric that matched perfectly! The pattern did not have a picture but was simple enough that I decided to give it an try.

These are the cute birds with the cut out pattern.
To create a distinction, the male has a fun little bow tie that matches his "outfit" :).The female can be identified by her adorable flower accessory on her head.Together these birds form the perfect cake topper measuring 3 1/2"W X 3 1/2"H X 6 1/4"L. They will work perfectly with blue and brown themed wedding and will add a touch of vintage.
